Empowering Youth, Advancing Gender Equality, and Strengthening Peace in Northern Uganda and South Sudan

At Balamu Community Outreach Program (BACOP), we believe that sport has the power to transform lives, unite communities, and inspire lasting peace. Through our Sport for Development approach, we empower vulnerable children and young people with opportunities to learn, lead, and thrive while strengthening social cohesion across Northern Uganda and neighboring South Sudan.

Working alongside local communities and development partners, BACOP delivers community-based programs that support refugees, internally displaced persons, host communities, women, and youth. Our work aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5: Gender Equality and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, promoting inclusive participation, equal opportunities, and peaceful coexistence.

Peace Through Sport

Years of conflict and displacement have left many communities in Northern Uganda and South Sudan facing poverty, trauma, unemployment, and social exclusion. Young people are especially affected, with limited opportunities to participate in peacebuilding and community development.

BACOP’s Peace Through Sport Community Outreach Project addresses these challenges by using sport as a platform for reconciliation, leadership, and dialogue. Football, volleyball, athletics, and recreational activities create safe spaces where young people from different ethnicities, nationalities, and backgrounds can interact, build trust, and develop mutual respect.

Our vision is to nurture a generation of young leaders who champion peace, inclusion, and positive social change.

Objectives

The project aims to:

  • Promote peaceful coexistence between refugee and host communities.
  • Advance gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  • Develop youth leadership, life skills, and civic responsibility.
  • Strengthen social cohesion through dialogue and teamwork.
  • Encourage healthy lifestyles through sport and recreation.
  • Inspire young people to become ambassadors for peace in their communities.

Six-Day Peace Sports Camp

A major milestone of the initiative was the successful Six-Day Peace Sports Camp, which brought together 2,190 young people from Northern Uganda, Eastern Uganda, South Sudan, refugee settlements, and host communities.

The camp provided an inclusive environment where participants learned, competed, and celebrated diversity. Beyond sporting competition, activities promoted teamwork, discipline, communication, leadership, and friendship. Young people who had never met before became teammates, demonstrating that meaningful relationships can overcome cultural and social barriers.

Participants also engaged in peace dialogues, leadership training, cultural exchange, and community-building sessions, reinforcing the message that diversity is a source of strength rather than division.

Advancing Gender Equality

Gender equality is central to BACOP’s mission. The project intentionally created equal opportunities for girls and boys to participate in sports, leadership, and decision-making activities.

Girls were encouraged to lead teams, take part in discussions, and build confidence through sport. Educational sessions addressed women’s rights, gender equality, prevention of gender-based violence, respectful relationships, and leadership development, empowering young women to become active contributors to peace and community development.

Creating Lasting Impact

The Peace Through Sport initiative has strengthened relationships between refugee and host communities while equipping young people with practical skills in leadership, communication, conflict resolution, and community service.

Key achievements include:

  • Engaging 2,190 youth in peacebuilding through sport.
  • Strengthening social cohesion among diverse communities.
  • Increasing girls’ participation in sport and leadership.
  • Building youth leadership and life skills.
  • Promoting dialogue, inclusion, and peaceful coexistence.
  • Creating a network of young peace ambassadors committed to positive change.

The lessons learned continue to influence participants as they return to their schools, families, refugee settlements, and communities.

Looking Ahead

BACOP is committed to expanding the Peace Through Sport initiative to reach more conflict-affected communities across Uganda and South Sudan. Future priorities include strengthening youth leadership, increasing opportunities for girls in sport, supporting refugee integration, promoting mental health and psychosocial well-being, and training community peace ambassadors.

Together with our partners, supporters, community leaders, and volunteers, we are building stronger, more inclusive communities where every young person has the opportunity to learn, lead, and live in peace.

Together We Play. Together We Unite. Together We Build Peace.
